B6T SWAP FAQ's There are only a couple of things you actually need to make this work. The engine comes from an 88 Mazda 323 GT or GTX. This engine (referred to as B6T) is 1.6 liter, DOHC and turbo-charged. It produces 132hp and is a BOLT in upgrade. You will also need it's ECU (engine control unit) and wiring. You also need an intercooler for your turbo. There are a few other things to consider, such as hoses, heat dissapation etc. Which we'll discuss below. Q:Which ECU and wiring should I use? A:For optimum performance, use a stock B6T GTX ECU and wiring. Q:What kind of clutch should I use? A:A stock clutch is not adequate in this application. Seek out an aftermarket Aspire-Festiva. Preferrably a Double Diaphram Pressure Plate and Clutch assembly. Q:Will I need to upgrade the brakes? A:It is not necessary, but consider using the complete front rotor/caliper/hub assembly from an Aspire. This will bolt to the Festiva struts/control arm. You will need to use the Aspire outter rods to make this swap work. For the rear, you may use the entire drum/spindle and torsion beam assembly from the Aspire. Q:Suspension suggestions? A:Coilovers for 92-97 Honda Preludes. These are nearly identical to the Festivas. Designed for a 2600lb car, these would make your Festiva's suspension very rigid. Q:Any issues with mounting the engine? A:The passenger side engine mount is offset from the Festivas. You will need to fabricate a mount to compensate this. Q:How do I compensate for increased engine compartment temperature? A:The stock fan does not allow clearance for the tubing to the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) from the turbo. This can be remedied by utilizing a Derale 10" Tornado fan. Which is only 1.5 inches thick. Under normal conditions, the stock radiator is sufficient. However for racing applications a heavy-duty radiator should be applied. Also radiator hoses are necessary due to the changes in the position of the outlets. One should also consider thermal padding for the wells, firewall and underneath the hood. Also an exhaust wrap should be utilized to keep engine compartment temperatures down. Consider sandblasting the manifold and downpipe before applying the exhaust wrap. Also, a solidifying compound should be used. These steps will ensure consistant performance from your ECU. Q:What about the intercooler for the turbo, any suggestions? A:Any one that will fit. Preferrably one that would use the straightest hosing configuration as possible.(to avoid restricting airflow) You may consider an intercooler from a Toyota MR-2 (91 and up.)It is larger and better suited to dissapate heat. Q:What about exhaust? A:A new exhaust must be fabricated for optimum performance. This can be achieved from 300 - 650 dollars.
